2008 St. Petersburg Review Poetry Contest:

The editors of St. Petersburg Review are very pleased to announce that the winner of its 2008 poetry contest is David Cravens of Farmington, Missouri. His poem “A Bench of Bishops is the Devil’s Flower Garden or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Hate Organized Religion” is both complex and rich while remaining accessible. We are excited to publish it in our 2008 issue.

We were amazed at the number of quality poems that we received. Every entry was read by at least two of our editors. As a result we will be publishing the following four runners-up in future issues: Mary F. Morris, “Love in the Time of Insurgency,” W.T. Moore, “What the Greek Said,” Don Schofield, “Days of August,” and Sandra Park, “Looking for My Husband".

In addition, we are happy to announce that the following writers were finalists in the contest: John Gardiner, Laguna Beach, California; Karin Loeb, Eau Claire, Wisconsin; John McBride, Bettendorf, Iowa; Michelle Perez, Fort Myers, Florida; Jacob Shores-Arguello, Fayetteville, Arkansas; Zinovy Y. Vayman, Boston, Massachusetts, and Mimi White, Rye, New Hampshire.

St. Petersburg Review will be repeating its poetry contest in 2009 and will be accepting entries between September 1, 2008 and January 15, 2009. Complete contest guidelines will be available at www.stpetersburgreview.com.

If you were a contest entrant, you will receive a copy of the 2008 issue with the winning poem. We think you will be impressed by the quality writing and diverse subjects. The new publication date is September 1.
